Genomics at school

At Lycée Charles Baudelaire, France

« Genomics at school » is a collaborative national project.


Twelve high schools (and now they are 21!) are working for an outstanding research about poplar. The poplar is an important vegetable in an economic point of view.

The purpose of the research is to carry out a mapping strategy, to visualize specific genes and defend the biodiversity of the species.

The person in charge with the project is Marc Villar, a searcher of INRA, the best french institute of research in agronomy. He is the specialist of poplar in France.

Our high school, Baudelaire High school, is engaged since four years now. We have to send our DNA samples and DNA sequences to INRA.

Students work in team about different subjects:

  • Precision handling:
    This team has to realize a complex DNA extraction, a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and eventually, an electrophoresis of control. Students have to be very concentrated, precise and clever. The material used is complex and expansive (micropipettes, chemical reagents, thermo cycler, Green Taq Polymerase, ...).
  • Theoretical information:
    This team has to understand the principle of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and nucleotide sequencing. Students must extract and select information to create a power point, for an oral explanation.
  • Technical information:
    This team has to understand the technique of DNA extraction and electrophoresis. Students must extract and select information to create a power point, for an oral explanation.
  • Nucleotides sequencing:
    This team has to understand the principle of nucleotides sequencing. Students use software named Genalys to clean sequences and detect variation in DNA. Results are sent to INRA.
  • Communication:
    This team has to communicate about the project and the sponsors. Students have to produce articles, posters and photos. Their productions are published on website, in classroom or since Science festival event. Students who participate to this project are 15 to 17 years old.

The educational interest of this project is first that every student can find and choose a team according to his ambitions.
Secondly, the team work is a great motivation.
Thirdly, the national collaboration, for a real research, is an amazing experience for students.
