CROSS-BREEDING BETWEEN TWO SPECIES OF FROG

Overview and research to carry out 

Hyla chrysoscelis and Hyla versicolor, two tree-frogs which live in similar geographical regions of North America, look very similar morphologically but possess behavioural differences. 

We are looking to discuss the idea that reproduction between these two species is possible.

Conditions necessary for reproduction

- To be recognised by mating call

- Similar living environments

- Compatible reproduction cycle length

- Genetic similarity

In the development cycle, meiosis separates the homologous chromosones into two groups;

fertilisation brings together the gametes to reform the chromosone pairs.

A strong genetic similarity (>50%) helps increase the chances of a successful cross-breeding 

Step 1: Plan an experiment to help to resolve the problem (10 minutes maximum)

Come up with a feasible experiment allowing a discussion of the idea that cross-breeding between these two species is possible.

Step 2: Carry out the experiment to obtain exploitable data

Carry out the experiment comparing the frogs’ mating calls in order to establish the idea that reproduction between these two species is possible.


Step 3: Process the data and present your findings

In the form of your choice, process and present the raw data so that you have the necessary information to respond to the problem. 


Step 4: Used the obtained results to respond to the problem and answer the question

Use the results to discuss the idea that reproduction between these two species is possible.

In order to discuss the idea that cross-breeding between the two species is possible:

Determine if the two species have a similar mating call

-          Compare the audio files of the calls of the Hyla chrysoscelis and the Hyla versicolor

-          Locate at least one syllable for each specie's call.

Determine if the two species have similar genes

-          Compare the sequences of cytochrome b involved in mitochondrial respiration.

-          Do the same for sequences of amino acid (light sensitive pigment = rhodopsine).

Call the teacher to check the result and get help.
